Overnight Tax Simplification in Greifswald, Effective from October 1, 2025
Greifswald Accommodation Tax Changes Announced
Greifswald, Germany - The city council has passed a resolution that will bring significant changes to the accommodation tax ordinance, effective from October 1, 2025. Here's what you need to know.
Starting from the fourth quarter of 2025, all accommodation providers, including hotels, pensions, hostels, holiday apartments/rooms, caravan pitches, and camping sites, will be required to report their total number of overnight stays quarterly. The first report after the change in the ordinance must be submitted by January 15, 2026.
The new regulation introduces a flat rate of 3 euros per adult per night, replacing the previous percentage-based system. Overnight stays of children and young people up to the age of 18 are tax-exempt, as are group trips, including accompanying group leaders, and people in Greifswald for training purposes such as students, school programs, or internships.
Non-profit organisations that alleviate suffering, promote the interests of the poor, protect the environment, provide basic social services, or contribute to community development are typically exempt from this tax. Facilities operated by or under the sponsorship of such organisations are also exempt from the accommodation tax.
The relevant documents and the ordinance itself can be found on the city's website under "Finance and Taxes". The city's homepage also provides information on paying the accommodation tax. If you have any questions regarding the accommodation tax, you can contact the Tax Department at 03834 8536-3131 or via email at the provided email address.
The administration has already sent the relevant documents to the registered taxable accommodation providers. The effects of this new regulation will be continuously analyzed and presented in the city council's committees to potentially adjust it. An adapted form and further explanations regarding the change in the ordinance can be found on the city's homepage under "Paying the accommodation tax".
