Pakistan cricket player declares retirement six years following final international gameplay

Usman Shinwari, a talented left-arm seamer from Pakistan, has announced his retirement from international cricket. The 28-year-old, known for his impressive performances in One Day Internationals (ODIs) and Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is), has had a career marked by both highs and lows.

Shinwari made his T20I debut in 2013, at the tender age of 19, with Mohammad Amir unavailable. He went on to represent Pakistan in 16 T20Is, 17 ODIs, and a single Test match. His T20I career was marked by impressive statistics, including 34 wickets at an average of 18.61, with three four-wicket hauls and two five-wicket hauls. Notably, both of his five-wicket hauls were against Sri Lanka, separated by a two-year gap.

However, injuries have been a significant factor in Shinwari's career. In 2017, he sustained a fracture in his lumbar spine, an injury that would haunt him again in 2020. These injuries kept him out of action for considerable periods, leading him to retire from red-ball cricket in November 2021.

Shinwari's last international appearance was in the 2025 National T20 Cup, where he went wicketless across four matches. During his absence, Shaheen Shah Afridi, a left-arm quick, entered the team, providing stiff competition.

From 2023 to 2025, the head coach of the Pakistan national cricket team was Saqlain Mushtaq, and the team captain in major tournaments like the Asia Cup during this period was Babar Azam. Shinwari was part of Pakistan's Asia Cup squad of 2018, where he took three wickets from three games.

In addition to his international career, Shinwari has played in various domestic leagues, including the Lanka Premier League and the Big Bash League for the Melbourne Renegades. His final List A game was in the Pakistan Cup in November 2023, where he took a five-wicket haul.
