Pakistani athlete Faisal Shafi secures Guinness World Record during Sydney Marathon

The Sydney Marathon 2025 saw a strong showing by Pakistan's running community, with numerous athletes crossing the finish line in impressive times.

Fasih Al Saleh, a Pakistani runner based in Norway, set a remarkable time of 3:39:50, while Faisal Shafi's performance earned him his seventh star in the Abbott World Marathon Majors series. Shafi completed the marathon in an impressive 3 hours, 40 minutes, and 13 seconds, setting a new Guinness World Record for running in a light military uniform.

Bilal Ehsan, a runner from Islamabad, was the top performer among those who travelled from Pakistan specifically for the event, with a time of 3:15:03. Fahd Mukhtar, Hamid Butt, and Bacha Hussain were also among the top performers from Pakistan on Sunday's marathon.

Among the top 10 fastest runners at the Sydney Marathon 2025 were athletes from Ethiopia and Kenya, with Hailemaryam Kiros and Addisu Gobena from Ethiopia, and Eliud Kipchoge from Kenya placing in the top 10.

Rawalpindi's Neelab Kayani and Ammar Zia, a Pakistani runner based in the UK, also completed the marathon with times of 4:10:28 and 3:52:27, respectively.

The Sydney Marathon course is known for its scenic tour of Sydney's most iconic landmarks, including the Opera House, Harbour Bridge, Royal Botanic Garden, and Sydney Cove. However, it is also renowned for its challenging hills, particularly in the later stages around Mrs Macquarie's Chair and Art Gallery Road.

Geo News' anchor Muhammad Junaid and British-Pakistani runner Huma Rahman were among the 10 Pakistani women who completed the marathon, with Rahman finishing in an impressive 3:38:09.

Notably, the Sydney Marathon is now a member of the Abbott World Marathon Majors series. This prestigious event attracts runners from all over the world and provides a platform for athletes to showcase their skills and compete against the best in the world.
