Pakistan's Foreign Minister Dar highlights the Palestinian issue as a critical benchmark for the United Nations.
In a significant address to the United Nations Security Council, Pakistan's Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar called for immediate action to resolve the ongoing Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
Dar proposed a series of steps, including an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the Occupied Palestinian Territory, unimpeded humanitarian aid access to alleviate the severe hunger crisis, an end to occupation and forced displacement of Palestinians, and renewed international support for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA). He also emphasized the need for the implementation of the Arab and OIC-led Gaza reconstruction plan and the revival of the two-state solution based on the pre-1967 borders with East Jerusalem as the capital of a sovereign Palestinian state.
"Gaza is not just a humanitarian catastrophe, but a collapse of humanity itself," Dar said, describing the dire situation in the region. He highlighted the unprecedented and deeply alarming hunger crisis and the catastrophic food insecurity, as well as the ongoing violations of international humanitarian law.
In addition to his proposals for the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, Dar strongly condemned the systematic targeting of hospitals, schools, U.N. facilities, aid convoys, and refugee camps in Gaza. He urged an end to forced displacement and settlement expansion in the region.
The current session at the United Nations Security Council is focused on reviving a credible political horizon for peace and justice. Dar emphasized the urgency of launching a credible, time-bound political process toward a two-state solution. He also warned that the Palestinian question is a litmus test for the credibility of the U.N., the Security Council, and the integrity of international law.
Meanwhile, Pakistan has denied any involvement in the deadly attack in Indian-administered Kashmir in April, which resulted in the death of 26 tourists. Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif called for a neutral probe into the incident. The worst Pakistan-India standoff in years occurred following the attack.
Sharif acknowledged the role the U.K. played in defusing tensions after the attack, and Pakistan International Airlines flights to the U.K. have since resumed.
Dar also expressed openness to "meaningful dialogue" with India on unresolved issues, emphasizing the need for peaceful resolution of disputes.
