Park undergoing transformation to include greenery and plant life: Maxipark becomes MaxiGarden.
The city of Hamm is set to undergo a significant transformation with the development of the Maxipark project, set to be completed in 2027. This ambitious undertaking, spearheaded by Michael Thews (MP, Constituency Hamm - Unna II), aims to bring together leisure, education, and sustainability in a harmonious blend.
At the heart of the Maxipark lies the MaxiGarden, an innovative space designed to educate visitors about climate-resilient gardening. Monika Simhäuser, Chairwoman of the Maxipark Supervisory Board, shared that an in-house kitchen will be part of the environmental education, allowing children to experience the process of growing and nourishing themselves from their own gardens.
The MaxiGarden will also offer workshops and seminars for visitors to acquire specialist knowledge on implementing climate-resilient gardening in their own homes. This hands-on approach is expected to inspire many thousands of visitors, according to City Architect Andreas Mentz, to transform their own green spaces for climate resilience.
The Maxipark project has received funding as one of 53 projects for climate adaptation nationwide. The federal government will cover 75% of the planned costs of 7.44 million euros for the project, with an additional 5.6 million euros granted for the Easter expansion of the Maxipark. This funding approval has been warmly welcomed by both Michael Thews and Andreas Mentz, who see it as a significant step towards a future-oriented chapter for the Maximilian Park.
The Maxipark expansion includes a Maxiplaza, MaxiGarden, and an educational building. Jörg Rogalla, CEO of the Maxipark, assures that climate resilience will not compromise the high aesthetic and qualitative standards of the park.
Looking beyond the Maxipark, the future responsibility for conveying the specialized knowledge about implementing the insights from MaxiGarden in private gardens will lie with a dedicated organization or expert group. Further information about the project can be found in the service portal.
Nina Frense (CEO of IGA Metropole Ruhr 2027 GmbH) highlighted the Maxipark project's uniqueness and international claim, with a focus on shaping parks in a future-oriented manner in the face of climate change. The MaxiGarden will also boast a significantly improved microclimate, minimizing risks of heat and heavy rainfall events.
