Philadelphia Union Claim Play-off Berth with 1-0 Defeat of FC Cincinnati Despite Playing With One Less Player

Philadelphia Union snatch play-off berth with narrow 1-0 win over FC Cincinnati, despite playing with ten men throughout the game, thanks to Damiani's decisive goal.

In a tense encounter at TQL Stadium, the Philadelphia Union secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over FC Cincinnati, clinching a spot in the MLS play-offs for the seventh time in eight seasons.

The match, which pitted the top two teams in the Eastern Conference, was marred by a controversial sending off for Union's Olwethu Makhanya with 30 minutes remaining in the game. Makhanya was already on a disciplinary tightrope, having been booked earlier in the game. A rash challenge on Evander earned him a second yellow card and subsequent red card, leaving the Union playing with ten men for the remainder of the game.

Despite being reduced to ten men, the Union managed to hold on to their lead, which was secured by Bruno Damiani's goal in the 49th minute of the match. Damiani scored from Milan Iloski's centre shortly after the restart, providing the Union with the crucial advantage they needed to see out the victory.

The Union have conceded the fewest goals (11) in the competition this season, thanks in part to the impressive form of their goalkeeper, Andre Blake, who achieved six clean sheets in the 2022 season. However, in Blake's absence, teenager Andrew Rick has stepped up to the plate, deputising for the injured Blake and also achieving six clean sheets this season. Rick saved well from Evander during the game, demonstrating his maturity and potential.

Union manager Bradley Carnell described the team's performance as "almost emotionless" in their 1-0 victory, a testament to their resilience and determination in the face of adversity. The Union's best goal difference (+23) in the MLS competition further highlights their dominance this season.

FC Cincinnati, who have suffered three straight 1-0 home defeats in a row, are currently five points off the pace at the top of the Eastern Conference. The Union's victory means they have extended their lead at the top, putting them in a strong position heading into the play-offs.

With the play-offs secured, the Union will be looking to build on their impressive form and challenge for the MLS title. Their tenacity and resilience have been on display throughout the season, and they will undoubtedly be a force to be reckoned with in the post-season.
