Plan for gender equality unveiled
Pforzheim Unveils Comprehensive Gender Equality Action Plan
The city of Pforzheim, Germany, has taken a significant step towards promoting gender equality with the unveiling of its first Gender Equality Action Plan. The plan, developed under the leadership of the city's equal opportunities officer, Susanne Brückner, was created through a participatory process that involved around 250 people, including representatives from various sectors and experts.
The action plan was a response to the city's commitment to the European Charter for Equality between Men and Women at the local level, which it signed in November 2017. The charter, aimed at promoting equal opportunities and combating discrimination, forms the backbone of the action plan.
Nearly half of the measures in the action plan are related to the Council of Europe Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence against Women and Domestic Violence, known as the Istanbul Convention. The Convention, which has been German law since 2018, applies equally to the federal government, states, and municipalities. The action plan's measures related to the Istanbul Convention aim to combat gender-based violence.
Mayor Peter Boch stated that the action plan fulfills legal requirements both internally and externally. He also emphasised that the action plan for the Istanbul Convention sends a clear signal against gender-based violence.
The action plan focuses on three key themes, with a total of 110 individual measures developed. Other measures aim to fulfill the requirements of the Baden-Württemberg Equal Opportunities Act and the commitments made under the city of Pforzheim's certification as a family-friendly employer by the "audit berufundfamilie" of the Hertie Foundation.
The status quo analysis of the implementation of the Istanbul Convention in Pforzheim is the first important measure implemented from the action plan. The equal opportunities officer noted that the impact of the action plan will be felt beyond Pforzheim.
The development of the action plan involved multiple local organizations and institutions, although the specific entities are not detailed in the provided search results. The action plan was submitted for approval to the city council in early April.
The city has committed to creating an action plan for gender equality in its administration, and the first Pforzheim Gender Equality Action Plan is a significant step in that direction. The plan outlines priorities, activities, and resources in line with the charter's guidelines and sends a strong message against gender-based violence.
