Planetarium hosts unique activities for viewing the lunar eclipse

Get ready for a celestial spectacle as Halle prepares to witness a total lunar eclipse on September 7, 2025. This rare event will be hosted by the Planetarium Halle, with two special events, "Starry Hour Special: Live Lunar Eclipse", scheduled for 6 PM and 7:30 PM in the Star Hall.

During a total lunar eclipse, the Moon completely enters the Earth's umbra, resulting in a copper-red hue, commonly known as a "Blood Moon". This fascinating phenomenon is caused by the Earth's atmosphere, which redirects the reddish portion of sunlight into the Earth's shadow onto the Moon's surface.

The Moon's position during the eclipse will be low above the eastern horizon throughout the entire course of the lunar eclipse. This could potentially affect the clarity of the view, making the events at the Planetarium Halle an excellent opportunity to witness this spectacle with the aid of telescopes and expert guidance.

The initial observation of the lunar eclipse may be challenging due to its position on the horizon. However, the Moon is expected to rise eclipsed at the eastern horizon around 7:45 PM during the lunar eclipse. The totality of the lunar eclipse will end at 8:53 PM in Halle, followed by the partial phase, which ends at 9:57 PM. The Moon's exit from the umbra can be followed until just before 10 PM.

It's worth noting that an eclipse only takes place when the Sun, Earth, and Moon are exactly in a line. This alignment, which allows for the Earth's shadow to fall on the Moon, does not occur every month due to the Moon's orbit being inclined to the Earth's orbit.

The twilight will still provide a bright sky during the lunar eclipse, while the Moon is significantly darkened by the eclipse. This event is not to be missed, and tickets for the "Starry Hour Special: Live Lunar Eclipse" can be purchased online at http://www.planetarium-halle.de or at the Planetarium box office during opening hours.

Unfortunately, the name of the astronomer involved in the preparations for the event has not been disclosed at this time. Regardless, the Planetarium Halle is gearing up for an unforgettable night under the stars, and we invite you to join them in celebrating this celestial wonder.
