On August 20, 2025, a suspected World War II-era unexploded bomb was discovered at the former sports field on Kreuzstraße in Lünen. To ensure public safety, the Westphalia-Lippe Explosive Ordnance Disposal Service will handle the uncovering, defusing, and removal of the bomb on August 21, 2025.

The exact duration and scope of the safety measures cannot be determined until the bomb is uncovered. However, residents should be prepared for possible loudspeaker announcements and a potential evacuation within a 250-meter radius of the site.

During a possible evacuation, residents are advised to take necessary precautions. This includes preparing medication and supplies for pets, reporting vulnerable persons and necessary ambulance services to the Ordnungsamt at telephone 02306 104-1672, and considering childcare, school, and kindergarten visits.

If an evacuation is necessary, residents should also avoid visitor traffic and consider seeking accommodation options with relatives, friends, or acquaintances outside the restricted area. It's important to close windows, doors, and roller shutters before leaving.

The city of Lünen will continuously update the public on the current status through their website and municipal social media channels during a possible evacuation. The Ludwig-Uhland-Realschule, Preußenstraße 162, has been designated as a gathering place during such an event.

For questions during weekdays from 8 am to 4 pm, residents can contact the Ordnungsamt at telephone 02306 104-1672. The city encourages residents to stay informed and follow instructions during this time.

Confirmation of the bomb's existence will be made after an excavation. Extensive safety measures may be necessary, including the possible evacuation, to ensure the safety of all residents. The city of Lünen thanks everyone for their understanding and cooperation.
