Plans to establish an aquatic center in Mombasa moving forward
A New Centre for Ocean Safety in Kenya
Kenya is set to establish a new national ocean centre, the Ocean Centre Kenya, in Mombasa. This centre will be one of seven similar centres worldwide, and it is anticipated to play a significant role in addressing maritime issues, improving ocean safety, and promoting sustainable use of marine resources.
The Ocean Centre Kenya will serve as a platform for dialogue and collective action, as emphasized by Mombasa Deputy Governor Francis Thoya. It is expected to facilitate deeper conversations and evidence-based action, and it will be instrumental in preparing for Kenya's hosting of the 11th UN Ocean Conference in 2026.
Judy Njino, executive director of the UN Global Compact Network Kenya, stated that the launch of Ocean Centre Kenya is a critical step in building resilience and sustainable use of marine resources. She explained that the centre will connect policymakers, academia, industry, and civil society to co-design ocean safety solutions that serve local needs while contributing to global environmental goals.
Dr Nancy Karigithu, special envoy on maritime and blue economy, called for all relevant state agencies to promote innovation through collaborative research and inclusive participation. She also emphasized the importance of deliberate engagement with coastal populations to unlock entrepreneurship and formal job opportunities within the maritime sector.
The ocean, central to socio-economic development, provides a wide array of careers for young people and women. The maritime sector holds untapped potential for inclusive growth. According to Francis Thoya, the Ocean Centre Kenya will address marine resource governance and improve the sustainability of livelihoods for those who rely on the ocean, such as fishers and port workers.
The centre will also address offshore renewable energy standards and ocean-based livelihoods through a multi-stakeholder approach. It aims to reduce marine accidents and improve safety in the Indian Ocean, as stated by Judy Njino. The Ocean Centre Kenya partners with the United Nations Global Compact Network and the Lloyd's Register Foundation to coordinate international efforts in this regard.
The UN Ocean Conference aims to enable stakeholders in the blue economy to develop local solutions informed by science and community experience. The Ocean Centre Kenya is expected to contribute significantly to this goal, co-designing ocean safety solutions that address local needs while contributing to global environmental goals.
