Player makes it to a significant $5K tournament finale with just three cards in hand
In the ongoing $5,300 SHRPO Championship event, a dramatic hand unfolded that left player Niall Costigan feeling frustrated. The hand, which took place on the feature table and was livestreamed last night, has since become the talk of the tournament.
PokerOrg columnist Matt Savage, executive tour director of the WPT, was present during the game, along with Steve 'Cuz' Buckner and other players. The hand began with Costigan raising preflop from UTG+1 to 4,500, believing he held pocket kings. Corey Harrison and Daniel Cove called the raise from their respective positions.
The flop came down , and action checked to Costigan, who bet 5K. Harrison folded, and Cove called to the turn. The turn card was dealt, and Cove check-called another bet, this time of 52,000, equal to just over a starting stack, taking the pot to 101,500.
As the hand reached the river, Costigan made a massive bet, leaving the pot at a staggering 153,500. However, when Cove revealed his hand, he had a pair of aces, leaving Costigan stunned. He realized his mistake and exclaimed, "I never saw the ace!"
Costigan argued that the whole hand should be declared dead and the chips refunded, but Savage declared that Costigan's hand would be declared dead. Cove, on the other hand, didn't find a bag (cash out), leaving him with just over his starting stack.
The controversial hand can be watched starting from 3:50:00 on the Hard Rock Poker YouTube channel, with Jesse Fullen providing commentary. Despite the setback, Costigan went on to continue playing, but later busted out of the tournament.
The player involved in the table rotation on Day 1B of the tournament, who was present during the controversial hand, was none other than poker legend Daniel Negreanu. Negreanu, known for his sharp poker instincts, was seen debating between believing in a top full house and a three-boarded hand in disputes with Costigan.
The Day 2 of the SHRPO Championship restarts at noon on Sunday. Players will be looking to avoid similar misfortunes as Costigan and aim for the top spots in the tournament. The action-packed event can be watched live on the Hard Rock Poker YouTube channel.
