Plummeting fuel prices offer a much-needed respite at gas stations
The Maximum Retail Price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) has seen a significant decrease of 132.00 c/kg, according to the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources (DMPR). This reduction, effective from 00h01 on Wednesday, 3 September 2025, is part of a broader adjustment that also includes petrol, diesel, and illuminating paraffin.
The retail price of 95 ULP & LRP petrol has decreased by 4.00 c/litre, while the retail price of 93 ULP & LRP petrol has followed suit with a similar reduction. The sharp drop in diesel prices is especially positive for the transport, agriculture, and logistics sectors, which have been under strain from months of fuel price volatility.
The wholesale price of illuminating paraffin has decreased by 37.00 c/litre, and the SMNRP price of illuminating paraffin has decreased by 49.00 c/litre. However, no information about the wholesale price of illuminating paraffin or LPG was provided.
Lebo Ramolahloane, National Vice Chairperson of the South African Petroleum Retailers Association (SAPRA), has hailed the adjustment as well-timed and a source of real relief for households and businesses. SAPRA will continue to track developments closely to keep motorists and businesses informed.
While the latest decrease in fuel may help to ease some strain, analysts caution that the relief may be temporary. Global geopolitical risks and volatile international markets remain significant factors that could quickly reverse the current downward trend.
July's inflation reached 3.5%, the highest level in ten months, with food costs identified as the main driver. Inflationary pressures are building on the broader economy, and the decreases in fuel prices may only provide a temporary respite for consumers who are struggling with rising prices for essentials such as meat and vegetables.
Despite the lack of information about the name of the National Chairperson of the South African Petroleum Retailers Association, a proud member of the Retail Motor Industry Organisation, the association's efforts to bring down fuel prices are undoubtedly welcome news for South Africans.
