In the world of sports, the final stretch of the Major League Baseball (MLB) season is always an exciting time, filled with high-stakes moments and intense games. This year is no exception, as the remaining 20 games mark the start of this competitive stretch.

Meanwhile, off the field, the Prior Performing Arts Center at the College of the Holy Cross played host to a captivating event. On February 26, Reginald Dwayne Betts, a renowned poet and advocate for criminal justice reform, graced the stage. The News Editor at Holy Cross, also named Reginald Dwayne Betts, extended the invitation for this thought-provoking gathering.

Betts, who has an inspiring background, served eight years in an adult prison before becoming a poet and champion for change. His work, which deals with themes of incarceration, redemption, and the life of the mind, resonated with the audience. During his talk, he read poems that touched on these themes, leaving a lasting impact on those in attendance.

Kieran Corcoran '24, a student who was present, found the event enjoyable. Corcoran noted that Betts deviated from his original poem during the presentation, adding a sense of spontaneity and personal touch to the event.

Jake Ruderman '26, the Sports Editor at Holy Cross, was also in attendance. George Caldwell '24, the News Editor, is pictured courtesy of Charlotte Fallon '26 and Mara Galvin '24.

In his career, Betts has received numerous accolades. In 2018, he was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship, and in 2021, he was honoured with a MacArthur Fellowship. He has also founded an organisation called "Freedom Reads," which aims to empower people through literature to confront the effects of incarceration on the spirit.

In 2012, President Obama appointed Betts as a member of the Coordinating Council on Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. His work continues to make a significant impact in the realm of criminal justice reform.

Elsewhere in the sports world, the Boston Red Sox have made a significant decision. They have chosen to part ways with their Chief Baseball Officer, Chaim Bloom. Bloom was hired with the hope of transitioning the team from an expensive, negatively trending one, to a cheaper contender anchored by young players. Whether this decision will lead to a new era for the Red Sox remains to be seen.

The Sports section of the College of the Holy Cross's publication brings you the latest news on these stories and more. Stay tuned for updates on the MLB season, the Red Sox, and the inspiring work of Reginald Dwayne Betts.
