The Hawaii Police Department is currently investigating the death of K-9 Archer, a 6-year-old Belgian Malinois/German shepherd mix from Hungary, who joined the force in 2020. The tragedy occurred after K-9 Archer was left in a police vehicle in West Hawaii for an "unacceptable amount of time," resulting in his death on Thursday.

K-9 Archer worked alongside his handler in various operations to keep drugs and dangerous contraband off the streets. He was trained in narcotics detection and proved to be an invaluable asset to the department.

Hawaii Police Interim Chief Reed Mahuna described K-9 Archer as a partner, protector, and a member of the police family. He expressed his condolences to K-9 Archer's handler, who is reportedly devastated following his death.

Chief Mahuna has stated that the death of K-9 Archer was a "preventable tragedy." He advised against leaving a dog in a hot car, even if the car is in the shade, or with windows partially down, as it will not prevent the dog from overheating.

In response to the incident, Chief Mahuna has promised a thorough criminal and administrative investigation into the death of K-9 Archer. He has also expressed a commitment to accountability and ensuring that a similar incident never happens again.

The Hawaii Police Department is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding K-9 Archer's death. At this time, the name of the police officer who worked with K-9 Archer in multiple missions against drugs and dangerous goods has not been released.

Chief Mahuna's words serve as a reminder to the public and the department alike about the importance of animal welfare and the consequences of negligence. The loss of K-9 Archer is a sombre reminder of the sacrifices made by our four-legged partners in service.

Rest in peace, K-9 Archer. Your service and sacrifice will never be forgotten.
