Policy changes implemented by the UK administration
In a significant development for the British Labour Party, Angela Rayner, a key figure in the party's social democratic wing, has resigned from her position in the cabinet.
Rayner, who rose through the ranks of the Labour Party despite a humble background as a teenage mother and growing up in social housing, has been a prominent figure in the trade union movement. Her northern English accent and working-class roots have also contributed to her image within the party.
However, Rayner's tenure has been marred by controversy. She came under pressure due to an error in her advice regarding stamp duty for a property, leading to calls for an investigation. This investigation concluded that she had breached the standards of conduct for cabinet members.
Rayner is also known for her witty and confrontational style, but has occasionally gone too far, such as calling political opponents "scum" and had to apologize. These incidents, combined with her underpayment of £40,000 in taxes in a property deal, have further tarnished her image.
In response to Rayner's resignation, Keir Starmer, the British Prime Minister, has reshuffled his cabinet. Shabana Mahmood has been named as the new Home Secretary, while David Lammy has been appointed as the new Deputy Prime Minister and Secretary of State for Justice.
Meanwhile, Nigel Farage, leader of the Reform Party, has moved up his speech at the annual conference of his leading party due to "news from Westminster." Farage announced the defection of Nadine Dorries, a former Conservative culture minister, to his Reform Party. The Reform Party currently has four seats in Parliament, but leads in polls over Labour.
This resignation is a major setback for Starmer, as Rayner was a key ally and a powerful voice for the party's social democratic wing. She has faced sexist remarks from political opponents, including allegations that she attempted to distract the then-Prime Minister Boris Johnson with her legs in Parliament.
In addition to Rayner's resignation, Lucy Powell, the Speaker of the House of Commons, has been dismissed. Ian Murray, the Scotland Minister, has also had to step down.
As the Labour Party navigates these challenges, the focus remains on whether Starmer can steer the party back to electoral success. The resignation of a key figure like Rayner will undoubtedly make this task more difficult.
