Political activist Saba Skhvitaridze, a member of the Coalition for Change, receives a prison sentence of two years.

In a recent ruling, the Tbilisi City Court has sentenced Saba Skhvitardize, a member of the opposition "Coalition for Change," to two years in prison. The verdict was delivered by Judge Jvebe Natchkebia.

The indictment against Skhvitardize was initially filed under Part 2 of Article 353-Prime of the Criminal Code for assaulting a law enforcement officer, specifically Mirian Kavtaradze, the head of the Main Department of Detectives of the Tbilisi Police Department. However, the charge was later reclassified to Article 120, which concerns the intentional infliction of minor bodily harm.

The court's decision was based on evidence, including video footage. The defendant, Skhvitardize, had failed to pay a previous fine, making the option of a fine for this offense inapplicable.

The punishment for this offense, according to Article 120, ranges from a fine or corrective labor, to house arrest, or imprisonment for one to three years.

The court accepted the claims and legal arguments presented by the defense. However, it's important to note that Skhvitardize has also reported multiple incidents of physical and psychological abuse by law enforcement officers following his detention. These reports raise concerns over the treatment of detainees in custody.

Saba Skhvitardize also holds victim status in the same case. This suggests a complex and multi-faceted situation that underscores the need for a thorough investigation into the allegations made by both parties.

This ruling is a significant development in the ongoing saga surrounding Saba Skhvitardize and the "Coalition for Change." As the case continues to unfold, it's crucial that all parties involved uphold the principles of justice and due process.
