Political figure Hamzah reveals that PN has a chosen candidate for the post of Sabah's Chief Minister, but refrains from disclosing the identity.
In a significant development, Parti Nasional (PN) has announced that its candidate for the next Chief Minister of Sabah will be a local Sabahan. The decision, which was announced at a press conference held after opening the general assemblies of the Bersatu Youth and women's wings in Sabah, is a clear indication of PN's focus on the state.
The identity of the candidate, however, remains undisclosed for now. PN has emphasised that the decision about the candidate will not be revealed prematurely.
Chief Minister Hajiji Noor, who was also present at the press conference, hinted at the potential dissolution of the state assembly in the coming weeks, but did not reveal the exact date. An election must be held within 60 days of the dissolution of the Sabah state assembly, as per the state's constitution.
Hajiji Noor, who is also the deputy chairman of PN, suggested that the next polls may be his last. His statement has added to the anticipation surrounding the upcoming elections.
Interestingly, all candidates contesting for PN's chief minister position are from Sabah. This move by PN is seen as a strategic one, as it aims to give full support to ensure the victory of its colleagues in Sabah.
Meanwhile, Parti Kesejahteraan Demokratik Masyarat (KDM), a Gabungan Rakyat Sabah-friendly party, has named its deputy president, Wetrom Bahanda, as its chief minister candidate if it forms the next state government.
The term of the Sabah state assembly expires on Nov 11, setting the stage for a crucial period in Sabah's political landscape. With the focus squarely on Sabah, the race for the next Chief Minister is expected to be intense and closely contested.
