Politician Lindner states unequivocally: No participation in the government under any circumstances.
In an interview with the news channel "Welt", FDP leader Christian Lindner reiterated his party's stance on joining a centrist government after the upcoming 2021 federal election. The FDP, Greens, and SPD are running in the election.
Lindner made it clear that the FDP will only enter a coalition after the election under certain conditions. He did not provide any new details on the party's campaign strategies or policies for the election. However, he did express opposition to red tax increases and green softening of the debt brake in a possible traffic light coalition.
The FDP's stance on a coalition is in response to accusations that a traffic light coalition – a potential alliance between the SPD, Greens, and FDP – would lead to a shift to the left. Lindner did not address these accusations directly, but he criticized SPD deputy Kevin Kühnert for referring to him as a "hot air merchant" and hinting at an SPD member survey before forming a government coalition.
Lindner also maintained that the current Social Democracy has little resemblance to the SPD of Schmidt and Schröder. He did not discuss the FDP's stance on any other potential coalition partners beyond the SPD and Greens.
It is worth noting that the FDP failed to enter the Bundestag after the 2025 election, and Lindner announced his withdrawal from politics, which likely affects coalition prospects. However, Lindner considered the CDU/CSU and the Greens as potential coalition partners after the federal election.
