The South African National Parks (SANParks) has announced the closure of the Storms River suspension bridge in the Tsitsikamma section of the Garden Route National Park for a maintenance period. The closure is scheduled from 1st to 15th September 2025, but visitors can still enjoy the bridge on weekends during this time.

During the closure, scenic hikes on rugged coastal terrain, including the popular Waterfall Trail and Otter Trail, will remain accessible. For those seeking adventure, Kayak and Lilo Adventures into the river gorge are also available.

The bridge, a significant stop along the Garden Route, is known for stretching 77 metres across the mouth of the river and hanging just seven metres above the surging waters. The maintenance work is planned and intentional, aimed at ensuring its continued safety and longevity.

The maintenance of the Storms River Suspension Bridge at the Storms River Mouth Rest Camp is carried out by SANParks, a South African government conservation organization. The closure aims to preserve the safety, integrity, and longevity of the bridge.

Visitors can still access the Waterfall Trail and Otter Trail during the week of the bridge's closure. Furthermore, the Loerie and Blue Duiker Trails, shorter routes suitable for families or casual walkers, are still open.

While the bridge is closed during weekdays (Monday to Friday), the activities mentioned, including Waterfall Trail, Otter Trail, Loerie Trail, Blue Duiker Trail, Kayak and Lilo Adventures, Birdwatching, Photography, Restaurant, and Gift Shop, are not affected. A restaurant and gift shop are open for visitors to relax and enjoy views of the ocean.

Birdwatching and photography opportunities are abundant during the closure period, making it an ideal time for nature enthusiasts. The bridge will reopen in full on 16th September 2025, coinciding with National Parks Week.

Despite the closure, the Storms River Suspension Bridge remains a must-visit destination for tourists exploring the Garden Route, a popular tourist route in South Africa. Visitors are encouraged to plan their visits accordingly to make the most of their experience.
