Potential fire in Seia may be extinguished by Sunday morning
The fire that has been ravaging the regions of Seia and Serra da Estrela is currently being fought with all available means, with the initiative of the local populations playing a crucial role. According to the President of the Municipal Chamber of Seia, the population is not at risk at the moment.
The fire is divided into four sectors. One sector is in the consolidation and mop-up phase, another has a 25% active perimeter, a third sector has an 80% active perimeter, and the last one is already controlled. The operational officer emphasized that the weather is helping, with a decrease in wind intensity and an increase in relative humidity.
The work to control the fire is progressing favorably, and the forecast is to possibly maintain or control the fire by tomorrow morning (Sunday). At 23:00, there were 626 operatives fighting the fire, supported by 192 land vehicles, according to the National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection (ANEPC).
The municipal emergency protection plan has been activated in Seia and will remain in effect until 23:59 on Monday. This plan allows for more public and private means to be available to the populations. The mayor of Seia has stated that the municipality is keeping active vigilance and making means available for both the command and the populations.
The localities of Vila Cova de Coelheira and Valezim are the areas of concern where the fire is not yet controlled. An assessment of possible damages is being conducted by the municipality, as the fire has passed through various localities and industrial zones. The area near Seia particularly affected by the current fire situation is the Serra da Estrela region, where the fire could cause extensive damage to forests, wildlife habitats, and local infrastructure.
The mayor described the fire as very intense and chaotic, with strong wind and gusts that often lacked a precise direction. Despite these challenges, efforts are being intensified to control the fire. The fire in Beiras and Serra da Estrela is still active.
The operational officer emphasized that the weather is helping, with a decrease in wind intensity and an increase in relative humidity. This is providing a more favourable environment for the firefighters to control the blaze. The president of the Municipal Chamber of Seia also stated that, at the moment, the population is not at risk.
The fire situation is being closely monitored, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available. The local authorities urge the public to stay informed and follow any instructions or warnings issued by the emergency services.
