Powerball Jackpot of $1.787 Billion Claimed by a Lucky Winner
The Powerball jackpot reached a staggering $1.8 billion on September 7, 2025, marking the second-largest lottery prize in U.S. history. This monumental sum was won by two lucky tickets, one sold in Missouri and the other in Texas.
Matt Strawn, Powerball Product Group Chair and CEO of the Iowa Lottery, emphasised that each $2 ticket sold during this jackpot run not only offered players a chance at the life-changing prize, but also supported vital public programs and services in their communities.
The Power Play multiplier for the draw was 2, meaning the winners could potentially multiply their winnings by this amount. The winners, who opted for the annuity option, will receive one immediate payment followed by 29 annual payments that increase by 5% each year. This means each winner will receive $893.5 million in the annuity option, before taxes. Alternatively, they can choose a lump sum payment of $410.3 million.
The Powerball draw was the 42nd since the jackpot was last won in California on May 31, 2025, setting a new game record for the longest jackpot run. The Powerball draw was overseen by the Multi-State Lottery Association and is offered by 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
The Powerball jackpot has since re-set to $20 million, ready for the next lucky winner to take home.
In the lead-up to the draw, Jackpocket, a lottery courier company, reported a 130% increase in Powerball ticket sales day over day. The states with the highest volume in Powerball ticket orders using Jackpocket for this Powerball run were Massachusetts, New York, and New Jersey.
Pete Sullivan, SVP, Lottery at DraftKings, expressed his excitement about the $1.7 billion Powerball jackpot, stating that such moments represent exciting times for Jackpocket as attention and interest in the lottery surge.
Before his role as Powerball product group chairman and CEO of the Iowa Lottery, Matt Strawn led the company "Strategic America". Strawn's previous experience in business strategy and marketing has undoubtedly played a significant role in the successful management of the Powerball jackpot run.
The world-record jackpot was $2.04 billion won in California in 2022, meaning the Powerball jackpot was the second-largest ever won. The winning numbers for the Powerball draw were 11, 23, 44, 61, 62, and red Powerball 17.
As the dust settles on this historic draw, the excitement for the next Powerball jackpot continues to grow. With the jackpot already at $20 million, who knows, the next big winner could be you!
