Powerhouse Performance by Holy Cross Rowing Team at Head of the Charles Regatta

The Holy Cross rowing and hockey teams have made a significant impact in their respective sports, with standout performances at prestigious events and notable recognitions.

In the world of NCAA hockey, Junior Liam McLinskey has been named a finalist for the prestigious Hobey Baker Memorial Award, given to the top player in the league. Meanwhile, in the realm of rowing, the Holy Cross teams have made a mark at the Head of the Charles Regatta, one of the biggest rowing events in the world, held annually in Boston.

The Head of the Charles Regatta uses a unique entry system. If a boat finishes in the top half of their event, the program they are racing for qualifies for an entry in that event the following year. This year, the women's team sent two boats - an eight and a four - and the men's team sent a collegiate eight and a club eight. Both the women's 8+ team and the women's 4+ team qualified for their respective events next year, finishing in 19th and 12th place out of 42 and 49 boats respectively.

The men's collegiate 8+ team also had a stellar performance, winning a bronze medal in their event and setting a program record, with a time of 14:52.603. This achievement is particularly significant as it marks the first time a Holy Cross hockey player's jersey has been retired. Patrick Rissmiller '02, the first player in Holy Cross hockey history to have his jersey retired, was honoured in a ceremony held ahead of a game against the United States Air Force Academy.

The course of the Head of the Charles Regatta is 4,702 meters long and includes sharp corners, difficult bridges, and heavy boat traffic. Rowing in this race requires focus, determination, and a drive to succeed. Both teams underwent a winter training season with indoor tank sessions and erg sessions to prepare for the challenge.

As the spring 2K sprint season begins, the Holy Cross Men's and Women's Rowing teams are back on the water, ready to continue their pursuit of success. The date of the game against the United States Air Force Academy is set for January 3, 2024.
