Preferred Formation for French Football: The Rise and Dominance of the 4-2-3-1 Setup in French Football Clubs

The French national soccer team, fresh from their victory against Croatia in the League of Nations quarter-finals, has chosen to stick with a familiar formation for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers. The 4-2-3-1 setup, which has proven successful during Euro 2016 and the 2018 World Cup, will once again be the team's tactical approach.

This formation maintains four offensive players, a departure from the three-pronged attack used in the 2018 World Cup. Kylian Mbappé will continue to shine on the right wing, with Blaise Matuidi often engaging on the left side. Jules Koundé, a French defender, has expressed a liking for this formation, praising its stability with two players in front of the defense, a number 10, and a significant offensive threat.

Didier Deschamps, the coach, is confident in this strategy, despite the loss to Spain in the semi-finals using the same formation. He believes they need to find the right balance to secure victories in the qualifiers.

In the midfield, the balance will likely come from Manu Koné and Adrien Rabiot, who are potential options for the qualifiers. Koné has earned praise from Deschamps, while Rabiot, the usual starter, will have only been without competition for a brief period after his chaotic final days at Marseille.

Ousmane Dembélé is likely to be a part of the squad for the qualifiers, but may not start due to a thigh injury. If he is unavailable for the 4-2-3-1 formation on the right wing against Ukraine in Wroclaw, Désiré Doué is a favourite to start in his place.

On the defensive side, William Saliba and Dayot Upamecano are potential candidates for the left center of defense in the ideal World Cup qualifiers squad. Maghnes Akliouche and Bradley Barcola are potential options on the left wing for the qualifiers.

In the best-case scenario, Adrien Rabiot will start in midfield for the World Cup qualifiers, providing the stability and offensive threat necessary to secure wins. The French national team will aim to build on their success against Croatia and continue their winning streak in the qualifiers.
