Preparations underway at Erfurter Train Service Workshop for battery-powered locomotives
The Erfurt train depot, the only DB Regio train depot in Thuringia, is set to undergo a significant transformation as it prepares for the future of rail travel. Plans include the transition from steam locomotives to battery-powered trains, with a focus on the Thuringia tilting technology network and the North Thurhingia diesel network.
This transition will be facilitated by a new infrastructure, including a 140-meter-long roof stand, which will be built specifically for the maintenance of battery-powered trains. The construction of this new facility is part of the ongoing modernisation of the Erfurt train depot, a process that has been ongoing for decades.
The Erfurt train depot has a rich history, having begun construction in 1925 and celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. Over the years, it has continually updated with the latest technology, and today, it services 51 regional trains regularly.
Trains from other federal states and third-party contracts also come into the Erfurt train depot for maintenance. From December 2028, this will include trains for the Thuringia battery network.
In preparation for this transition, there is a focus on three model series for the maintenance of trains at the Erfurt train depot. This focus on specialization aims to qualify the approximately 100 employees working at the depot. However, as of September 2025, no publicly available details about the planned investment costs for expanding the DB Regio workshop complex in Erfurt specifically to accommodate maintenance for trains of the Thuringian battery network have been disclosed.
The maintenance workshop at the Erfurt train depot is operated by DB Regio, a subsidiary of Deutsche Bahn. Despite the lack of information on the investment costs for the new infrastructure, the commitment to this transition is clear, marking an exciting new chapter for the Erfurt train depot.
