Preserved Fruit Blend of Apple, Ginger, and Turmeric
In a delightful surprise trip on Sunday 19th September, food blogger Mayuri took her readers on a journey to an apple orchard named Vergers & Cidrerie Denis Charbonneau. This picturesque orchard, located in a region known for its apple production, boasts over 28,000 apple trees and 15+ varieties of apples.
As visitors picked their apples by twisting gently and pulling if ready, they had the opportunity to sample and purchase various ciders from the cidrerie. The orchard entrance fee was CAD 20 for a large bag.
After the exciting day at the orchard, Mayuri shared a recipe for a unique and healthy jam: Apple Ginger & Turmeric Jam. This easy-to-make recipe requires a mixture of Honeycrisp and Gingergold apples, 2 tbsp fresh ginger, 1/4 tsp turmeric powder, 1 cup sugar, and 2 tbsp lemon juice. The recipe, free of artificial coloring and preservatives, is simple and requires no additional pectin due to the high pectin content in apples.
To make the jam, Mayuri instructs readers to peel and core the apples, chop them finely, and add lemon juice to prevent browning. The mixture is then cooked in a heavy bottom pan over medium heat, simmered for 30 - 40 minutes until it thickens, and finally, bottled in sterilized jars.
Mayuri encourages her readers to share their experiences or pictures of the recipe by commenting, emailing, or tagging on social media. The recipe can be found on Mayuri's blog, with options to share or email the link to a friend.
This home-made Apple Ginger & Turmeric Jam is not only a delicious addition to your morning toast but also a great way to preserve the freshness of the apples from Vergers & Cidrerie Denis Charbonneau. The jam can be stored at room temperature for about a month, but it is recommended to keep it in the fridge for longer shelf life.
In addition to the Apple Ginger & Turmeric Jam, Mayuri's blog will feature recipes for a soup, pickle, and more, all made from the apples picked at Vergers & Cidrerie Denis Charbonneau. Some other recipes using apples include Egg-free Apple Cinnamon Muffins, Apple Crumble Cheesecake, Apple Aebleskiver, Green Apple and Spring Onion Chutney, and Apple Crisp.
So, grab your bags and head to your nearest apple orchard to pick some fresh apples and try out Mayuri's delicious Apple Ginger & Turmeric Jam recipe!
