Push for the Energy-Saving Overhaul of Public Structures - Progression of energy refurbishment in public structures forthcoming

Sachsen-Anhalt, a German state, is stepping up its efforts to make public buildings more energy-efficient. Energy Minister Armin Willingmann recently announced plans to renovate administrative buildings, schools, sports facilities, and scientific institutions as part of an expanded funding program.

The funding program, known as "Sachsen-Anhalt ÖFFIZIENZ," is part of the state's larger energy-efficient renovation of public buildings. It is supported by the Ministry of Energy and funded with 89 million euros from the European Regional Development Fund (EFRE).

The program offers up to 90% grant coverage for eligible costs, including insulation, technical equipment, or lighting. The application process has been simplified, and applications can be submitted through the Investments Bank of Sachsen-Anhalt (IB) on their website.

As of mid-August 2025, around 15% of the available funding budget had been received. The required documents and evidence for applications will also be simplified to make the process more accessible.

Scientific institutions will be able to apply for funding in the future, ensuring that research facilities are also energy-efficient. The climate is a key consideration in these renovation plans, as energy efficiency is seen as a crucial key to reducing energy costs, protecting the climate, and making public infrastructure future-proof.

Willingmann emphasised the importance of these measures, stating that they will help Sachsen-Anhalt meet its climate protection goals while also saving money in the long term. The state is committed to making its public buildings more energy-efficient and sustainable.
