ProgressPlay Fined £1M for AML, Social Responsibility Failings

ProgressPlay, a significant white-label operator overseeing over 130 gambling platforms, has been penalized £1 million by the Gambling Commission for failing to meet anti-money laundering (AML) and social responsibility standards. This is the second time the company has faced enforcement action since 2022.

The company's shortcomings included inadequate risk assessments for money laundering and terrorist financing, insufficient transaction monitoring, and not verifying sources of funds. The Gambling Commission found that ProgressPlay did not adopt a sufficiently risk-based approach to AML and fell short in identifying potential gambling-related harm among customers.

ProgressPlay, led by CEO Itai Loewenstein since May 2022, accepted the fine and acknowledged that the issues related to historical practices. The company has since invested £1.5 million in player protection technology and improved AML handling, going beyond mere compliance to better serve customers. As part of the penalty, ProgressPlay must undergo a third-party audit to demonstrate the effectiveness of its updated AML and responsible gambling policies.

This £1 million fine, following a similar penalty of £175,718 in May 2022, sends a strong message about the importance of AML and social responsibility in the gambling industry. ProgressPlay's commitment to addressing these issues and investing in improved practices is a step in the right direction.
