Propaganda Materials from Tyrol and Vorarlberg During World War I

In the heart of the Alps, the province of Tyrol witnessed a significant chapter of history during World War I - the air war. A new series, "Fliers from Tyrol and Vorarlberg in the k.u.k. air force," sheds light on this largely forgotten period, focusing on individuals who served in the Austro-Hungarian air force from the two westernmost crown lands of the Habsburg monarchy.

The series, edited by Thomas Albrich, Nikolaus Hagen, and Stefan Stachniß, contains over 130 new biographies, revealing the stories of many Tyroleans and Vorarlbergers who served as pilots and observers. These biographies are part of a four-volume work, published by Wagner University Press in April 2025.

The series does not limit itself to well-known pioneers of aviation. It also highlights previously unknown individuals, offering a comprehensive view of the air war in Tyrol. One such pioneer is Heinz von Ficker, an Innsbruck meteorologist who played a significant role in the air war.

The air war on the southern front intensified from the beginning of 1916, with cities like Innsbruck becoming targets. In fact, Innsbruck was targeted for the first time by an Italian air raid in February 1918. The series provides detailed accounts of these events, offering a fresh perspective on this lesser-known aspect of World War I history.

The research and publishing project for the series originated from a teaching and research project at the Institute of Contemporary History. With the publication of volumes 3 and 4 scheduled by Wagner University Press in April 2025, the project is set to be completed, providing a valuable resource for historians, students, and anyone interested in the history of World War I.

This series serves as a reminder of the courage and sacrifice of the individuals who served in the air war in Tyrol during World War I. By bringing their stories to light, we not only honour their memory but also contribute to a more complete understanding of this critical period in history.
