The Domstufen-Festspiele in Erfurt, Germany, is currently hosting a series of captivating opera performances, with the latest being the heartwarming production of "La Bohème" by Giacomo Puccini. The festival, which attracts thousands of visitors each year, has already seen a successful run with an attendance rate of 100 percent so far, according to Steffi Becker, spokesperson for Theater Erfurt.
The unique elements of the Domstufen-Festspiele add an extra layer of charm to the event. The performances take place in an open-air setting, with the imposing backdrop of the Mariendom and the neighboring Severikirche providing a stunning visual experience. Unique features include a towering replica of the Parisian Eiffel Tower and a giant slide over the steps in front of Erfurt Cathedral.
Despite the weather causing some disruptions, the festival has been running smoothly. A performance on Wednesday was cancelled due to a thunderstorm, while two performances of "The Little Ghost" were called off due to persistent rain on Thursday and Friday. However, the family opera, based on Otfried Preußler's work, was well-attended, with a 95 percent attendance rate.
The replica of the Eiffel Tower, which is part of the scenery for "The Little Ghost", will remain in Thuringia. The exact location of the replica and the giant slide has not been revealed yet.
Looking ahead, the Domstufen-Festspiele has an exciting lineup for next year. Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical "Jesus Christ Superstar" is set to be performed from August 7 to August 13, 2026. Last year, the festival attracted around 40,000 visitors with the musical classic "Anatevka".
Safety is a top priority at the Domstufen-Festspiele. During the performance of "The Little Ghost", a children's and youth choir slid down a 23-meter-long slide integrated into the stage design, ensuring a memorable experience for all. Affected audience members who had their performances cancelled due to the weather could return their tickets and get a refund.
The Domstufen-Festspiele in Erfurt continues to be a must-visit event for opera lovers and families alike, offering a unique blend of culture, entertainment, and spectacle against the backdrop of Erfurt's stunning cathedral.
