Celebrating 75 Years of THW: The "FUELex" Exercise in North Rhine-Westphalia

The Federal Agency Technical Relief - State Association Office North Rhine-Westphalia has announced the upcoming "FUELex" exercise, set to take place from August 23, 2025, to various dates in September. This significant event marks the 75th anniversary of the Technical Relief Agency (THW), the operational civil defense authority of Germany.

The exercise will be held on the grounds of the Zollverein Coal Mine in Essen, North Rhine-Westphalia, a fitting location for an organisation that has been serving the nation for over seven decades. As the largest of the eight federal state associations, with 127 local associations, 12 regional areas, and nearly 20,000 members, the THW is a proven and indispensable partner in Germany's disaster prevention architecture.

The "FUELex" exercise will showcase the THW's capabilities through various performances and interactive activities. Visitors can expect live musical entertainment, a high-level panel discussion, and a ceremonial opening, which will include an impressive performance showcase in Essen on August 23, 2025.

The exercise framework scenario involves a wet and cold summer, saturated soils, and an increasingly hybrid threat situation. This scenario is designed to test the THW's readiness and response capabilities in a challenging environment.
