Police Officer Simon Bohr, who was fatally shot during an operation in Volklingen a week ago, was laid to rest in a moving funeral ceremony in Saarlouis on Thursday.

The funeral procession, which included hundreds of uniformed police officers, marched through the city for about 1.6 kilometers before arriving at the evangelical church. Approximately 1,500 to 2,000 people attended the emotional service.

The suspect, who wrested a service weapon from Simon Bohr before shooting him, is currently under investigation for murder by the public prosecutor's office. The crime has sparked nationwide outrage, with widespread sympathy for Simon Bohr's death felt throughout Germany and neighboring countries, as well as the Saarland population.

The memorial service was not public but was broadcast in a media center set up for the occasion. The widow of Simon Bohr addressed the mourners during the service, but her words were not made public.

Police President Thorsten Weiler described the current situation as one of the darkest hours for the Saarland police. He stated that Simon Bohr gave everything for the protection and security of his fellow human beings. Simon Bohr was described as an incredibly positive, professional, reliable, and approachable person.

During the service, a trumpet solo of the Beatles' song "Yesterday" was played, bringing a poignant moment to the proceedings.

The politician who attended the central memorial ceremony for Simon Bohr was Saarland's Minister-President Anke Rehlinger (SPD); also present was Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU).

A painted heart image was placed in front of a podium with a photo of the police officer during the service. Simon Bohr leaves behind a wife and two children.

A central memorial service for Simon Bohr is planned for Friday in Saarbrücken. The funeral was a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by police officers every day to keep our communities safe.
