In the heart of Giessen, a vibrant and captivating event is set to take place this summer and autumn. The city's Economic Development Office has launched the "Giessen is ELEFANTASIC because..." project, which has been selected in the Hessian competition "Move into the Middle - Bring Life to the City" and received funding.
At the heart of this exciting project is the historic Elephant Toilet, a building with roots dating back to the end of the 19th century when it was used for the accommodation and presentation of exotic animals, including elephants. Today, the Elephant Toilet serves as the centrepiece of the ELEFANTASIC project, hosting a series of captivating events and activities.
One such event is the Elephant Parade, where elephants will be riding rickshaws, adding a touch of whimsy and wonder to the city's streets. Live music will fill the air, with performances taking place at the elephant living spaces and Fair Trade City Giessen. ELEFANTSIASTIC Chess games will also be held at the Gießen Elephant Toilet, offering a more relaxed and intellectual experience for those who prefer strategy over rhythm.
The project is not just about entertainment, though. It also aims to promote Giessen's rich history and culture. For instance, the Gießen is ELEFANTASIC project will feature a literature day about elephants, as part of the Gießen is ELEFANTASIC project. Historically, exotic animals, including elephants, were presented at this location in the city centre by travelling circuses or animal traders.
Visitors to the city can also learn more about Giessen through the Tourist Information, which is open Monday to Friday from 10 am to 6 pm and Saturday from 10 am to 2 pm. The Tourist Information offers free information about events, sights, and leisure activities, as well as various Giessen products, tickets for city tours, and other events. Additionally, various "fantastical" products related to the Elephant Toilet are available at the Tourist Information, including baby bodys, bags, mugs, T-shirts, and magnets, all produced or refined regionally.
Moreover, Gießen Marketing is involved in offering high-quality and regional products under the "Good from Gießen" label. These items include bags, mugs, water bottles, honey, and spirits, among others.
The Gießen elephant toilet will also play a part in the city's Christmas celebrations, as it will be pulling the Gießen Christmas tree later this year, with sales expected to start around mid-November.
In a unique twist, the mascot Benjamin Blümchen will be attending an event at the Gießen Elephant Toilet, adding another layer of excitement to the ELEFANTASIC project.
So, whether you're a local or a visitor, the Gießen is ELEFANTASIC project promises to offer something for everyone, making this summer and autumn in Giessen an unforgettable experience.
