Protest over Taiwan's foreign minister's trip to the Philippines by Chinese authorities
The visit of Taiwan's Foreign Minister, Lin Chia-lung, to the Philippines as a head of a high-level delegation of investors has sparked a diplomatic row between China and the Philippines.
During his visit earlier this week to the Clark Freeport Zone, an industrial hub north of the capital, Lin did not have any official engagements with political and security officials. However, this decision did not prevent a strongly worded protest from the Chinese foreign ministry.
Beijing accused the Philippines of providing a platform for "Taiwan independence" separatists to engage in anti-China activities. The Chinese foreign ministry urged the Philippines to stop pursuing the wrong course and return to the right track at once, and warned against playing with fire on issues concerning China's core interests.
China claims Taiwan as part of its territory and opposes official interactions between Taiwan and other countries, particularly the United States. The Chinese foreign ministry's statement followed the Philippines' stance of maintaining economic and people-to-people engagements with Taiwan while upholding its "One China" policy.
The Chinese foreign ministry's statement exacerbated tensions between China and the Philippines, which are already strained due to increasingly tense confrontations over the ownership of islands and fishing grounds in the South China Sea.
The Philippine government maintains that it does not recognize Taiwan as a sovereign state under a "One China" policy. However, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Beijing issued a statement saying that the Philippines has severely violated its own commitment on Taiwan-related issues.
The Chinese foreign ministry's statement came after the Philippines did not allow Lin to have any official engagements with political and security officials during his visit. Two Philippine officials, who confirmed Lin's visit, spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly.
The Chinese foreign ministry warned the Philippines not to underestimate the firm resolve of the Chinese people to safeguard their sovereignty and territorial integrity. They stated that there is a price to pay for trampling on China's red line, and all consequences arising therefrom will be borne by the Philippines.
This latest incident has added fuel to the already volatile relationship between China and the Philippines, raising concerns about the future of bilateral relations and the stability of the South China Sea region.
