Public access to the Jefferson and St. Lawrence Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) is granted for a 16-day period, as announced by DEC.

The annual open house for wildlife management areas in Jefferson and St. Lawrence counties is just around the corner, running from August 16 to August 31. Visitors can take this opportunity to explore three stunning areas: Perch River WMA, Upper and Lower Lakes WMA, and Wilson Hill WMA.

Perch River WMA, spanning nearly 8,000 acres in Jefferson County, offers a diverse landscape for exploration. The area will be open daily from sunrise to sunset, except for Perch Lake, which opens at noon. Fishing is allowed in Perch River WMA, but motorized boats are not permitted in Perch Lake. Visitors are advised to avoid machinery and obey all posted signs.

Upper and Lower Lakes WMA, located in St. Lawrence County, is the largest of the three, covering a total area of 8,770 acres. This expansive area will also be open from sunrise to sunset. The posted refuge and wetland restricted areas will also be accessible during this period. Fishing is prohibited in Nichols Pool within Wilson Hill WMA, located near Massena, which covers about 4,000 acres along the St. Lawrence River.

Visitors can explore the marshes and meadows in Wilson Hill WMA. Habitat and wildlife management projects may be ongoing during the open period, so it's essential to respect the surroundings and follow all rules.

For more details, maps, and bird lists, you can contact the DEC's Regional Wildlife Office at 315-785-2263. It's always a good idea to be well-informed before setting out on an adventure.

Remember, these wildlife management areas are typically closed most of the year to allow for breeding and raising young. So, take advantage of this opportunity to immerse yourself in nature and discover the beauty of these areas. Happy exploring!
