Queen Elizabeth's Alleged Opposition to Brexit Revealed in Fresh Publication
In a fascinating new book, "Power and the Palace" by royal journalist Valentine Low, the Queen's private views on Brexit have been brought to light. This follows Low's previous book, "Courtiers."
According to the book, the Queen is said to have expressed clear opposition to Brexit in a conversation with a senior minister in the early spring of 2016. If she had a vote, she would have voted Remain in the 2016 Brexit referendum.
The Queen's private stance on Brexit was known to senior politicians, including David Cameron, but was kept hidden due to the Queen's formal political neutrality. In a private conversation shortly before the referendum, she reportedly said, "We shouldn't leave the EU," and "it is better to stick with the devil you know."
The Queen's views on Brexit were in stark contrast to the headline published by The Sun newspaper in 2016, which stated "Queen Backs Brexit." This headline sparked a rare official complaint from Buckingham Palace to the press regulator. The Palace maintained that the Queen remained "politically neutral."
The book, based on nearly 100 interviews, also lifts the lid on some of the fallout when Prince Harry and Meghan stepped back as working royals.
Victoria Murphy, a contributing editor at Town & Country and a frequent contributor to Good Morning America, has been reporting on the British Royal Family since 2010. She has interviewed Prince Harry and has traveled the world covering several royal tours. Murphy authored the Town & Country book The Queen: A Life in Pictures, released in 2021.
Throughout her reign, the Queen often had opinions on various subjects, but she chose not to share them publicly, or those who heard were discreet about repeating them. The Queen did not have a vote due to her constitutional role, which requires political neutrality.
This new book provides a fascinating insight into the private thoughts and opinions of one of the most respected figures in British history.
