Race Car Driver Liam Lawson Set to Compete in Singapore Grand Prix, Sporting Helmet Crafted by Christchurch Father
In an exciting turn of events, a father-of-three from Christchurch, New Zealand, named Ian Ebbs, has won a nationwide helmet design competition held by Formula 1 star Liam Lawson. The competition invited New Zealanders to submit original designs for Lawson's helmet, and Ebbs' bold, energetic, and uniquely Kiwi design stood out from over 500 entries.
The winning design features a fun, cartoon-like kiwi bird donning a pink backwards cap while driving a golf cart. This whimsical image encapsulates Lawson's love for New Zealand, golf, and his personal journey, as Ebbs took inspiration from Pixar's Lightning McQueen but tailored it to Lawson's newfound love for golf.
Ebbs, a lifelong Formula 1 fan, came up with the idea to enter the competition during a visit to a dairy with his son. His passion for the sport, passed down to his family, shines through in his design. The design includes elements like ferns, rolling hills, clouds, kiwi fruit, and the shape of New Zealand, all symbolising the beauty of the country.
Lawson personally reviewed every submission for the competition and expressed gratitude to all participants. He mentioned the difficulty in choosing a single winner but was drawn to Ebbs' design for its unique blend of fun, energy, and Kiwi spirit.
As part of his prize, Ian Ebbs will travel to Singapore with his 8-year-old son Michael to deliver the custom-designed helmet to Lawson in person ahead of the race weekend in October. This will be a memorable experience for both father and son, as they share their passion for Formula 1 with the rising star.
Lawson, who has chosen a fan-designed helmet for the Singapore Grand Prix this October, expressed his excitement about the winning design, saying, "Ian's design perfectly represents my love for New Zealand and my newfound love for golf. I can't wait to wear it on the track."
The main colours of the design are pink, blue, and white, which are colours Lawson often uses on his helmets. This continuity between the old and the new designs adds a personal touch to the helmet, making it truly unique.
In an interview, Ebbs shared his feelings about winning the competition, saying, "It's an absolute dream come true. I've been a Formula 1 fan all my life, and to have my design chosen by Liam Lawson is just amazing. I can't wait to travel to Singapore with my son and meet Liam in person."
The collaboration between a fan and a star athlete is a testament to the power of passion and creativity. This story serves as an inspiration to all, reminding us that dreams can indeed come true.
