In an unfortunate turn of events during Germany's match against Lithuania at EuroBasket 2022, held in Tampere, Finland, the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has taken action against racist behaviour.

German national team captain, Dennis Schröder, reported experiencing racist heckling, including monkey noises, from the Lithuanian crowd. Schröder, who made these comments in an interview with MagentaSport, expressed that such behaviour has no place in sports and cannot be accepted.

The German Basketball Federation reported the removal of two individuals in connection with the incident, and the arena's security identified the banned individual using video footage. FIBA has since banned Filip Petrusev, a Serbian player, from attending further EuroBasket 2022 games. Petrusev was fined 5,000 euros and suspended for one mandatory game in a FIBA competition due to a disqualifying foul in a previous match.

In light of the incident, FIBA has shared relevant footage and information with authorities and plans to contact the Lithuanian team delegation to inform them of the situation and support efforts to prevent similar incidents in future games.

Schröder's experience underscores the need for a zero-tolerance policy against racism in sports. FIBA's swift action serves as a reminder that such behaviour will not be tolerated at any level of competition.

In a statement, Schröder reiterated his stance, saying, "Racism has no place in sports. I stand against it, and I hope that everyone else does too." The incident highlights the ongoing struggle against racism in sports and the importance of continued education and vigilance to ensure a safe and inclusive environment for all athletes and fans.
