2022 Italian Grand Prix Qualifying: Tight Battle for Pole Position
The Italian Grand Prix qualifying session at Monza delivered an exhilarating spectacle, with the top ten drivers separated by a mere 0.650 seconds. Max Verstappen clinched his fifth pole position of the season, and his 45th in his career, breaking Lewis Hamilton's 2020 record with a pole time of 1:18.792.
Lando Norris started the qualifying sessions on a challenging note, struggling in the early sessions and having to abort his Q2 lap due to a lock-up and track limit violation. However, he bounced back in the final session, finishing a commendable second, with a smile on his face and the words, "I'm very happy with P2."
Charles Leclerc, who started qualifying in position 3, was the fastest in the first run of Q3, but ultimately finished fourth. Leclerc's performance briefly raised Tifosi hopes, but it was Max Verstappen who took the pole position, much to the delight of Red Bull Racing fans.
Oscar Piastri secured the third spot on the grid, following a solid qualifying performance. Piastri, however, downplayed his achievement, calling it "nothing special," but overall, he felt he had a good session.
The surprise of the qualifying session was Williams' early exit. Despite looking strong in the training sessions, they failed to make it to the final round, with Isack Hadjar failing to qualify and finishing 16th.
The battle for the top positions was tightly contested, with several drivers swapping positions throughout the sessions. Fernando Alonso, driving for Aston Martin, will start ahead of Yuki Tsunoda in the Red Bull, while Gabriel Bortoleto, with a better qualifying performance, will start from seventh, ahead of Nico Hülkenberg at Sauber.
Unfortunately, several drivers failed to make it through to the final round. Lance Stroll, Franco Colapinto, Pierre Gasly, and Liam Lawson were among those who were eliminated in Q2. Nico Hülkenberg and the two Williams drivers, Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon, found themselves between the Haas drivers, with Oliver Bearman finishing eleventh and Esteban Ocon 15th.
As the race approaches, the anticipation is palpable. With such a close qualifying session, the race promises to be an exciting one, with positions likely to change hands multiple times.
