Racing event Grand Prix shifts its location from Toronto to Markham, a northerly city, following almost four decades.
The NTT IndyCar Series is set to make a splash in Markham, Ontario, next year, as the Ontario Honda Dealers Indy Toronto moves its tracks from Toronto's Exhibition Place to the downtown core of Markham.
The new race, colloquially known as the "Roar on the Lake Shore", will take place from August 14-16, 2026. A temporary 12-turn, 3.52-kilometre track will be built for the occasion, featuring a double-sided pit lane.
The move comes amidst the 2026 FIFA World Cup hosting duties, which have made it "not logistically possible" to host both the World Cup and the Honda Indy in the same summer, according to Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow.
IndyCar, the highest class of open-wheel auto racing in North America, sees vehicles capable of topping speeds of 370 km/h. The race is expected to draw over 140,000 attendees and generate "tens of millions" of dollars in economic activity.
Drivers Kyle Kirkwood and Will Power, who has set the fastest ever race lap in 2018 with a time of 59:7140 at the Honda Indy in Toronto, have noted a predominant bump along one particular stretch of the track entering Turn 3 as a challenge.
The track in Markham will be built on a section of Lake Shore Boulevard that is currently under construction to make way for the controversial Therme Spa and waterpark. Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti expressed enthusiasm about hosting the race.
The Honda Indy, previously known as the Molson Indy, has become one of Ontario's largest sporting events. The exact location within Markham's downtown core where the race will take place has not been specified, leaving fans eager to find out which city in Canada will likely host the NTT IndyCar Series in 2026.
Financial details of the new five-year agreement were not disclosed. Organizers remain optimistic that the race in Markham will be a thrilling addition to the city's event calendar.
