In a unfortunate turn of events, Shadwell's retained rider, Jim Crowley, suffered a severe crash at York Racecourse on Sunday. As a result, Crowley underwent surgery for a broken leg and pelvic fracture on Monday at Leeds General Infirmary. His stablemate, Trevor Whelan, also sustained a broken leg in the same incident.

The incident occurred during the Listed Garrowby Stakes, where the horse involved was the William Haggas-trained favourite, Almeraq.

Angus Gold, Shadwell's racing manager, confirmed the news of Crowley's injuries. With Crowley facing an extended spell on the sidelines, the current stable jockey for Shadwell for the rest of the season is William Buick.

Meanwhile, Chris Hayes, a rider who has been associated with Shadwell for several years, has been called up to ride Owen Burrows' horse, Anmaat, in the Irish Champion Stakes this weekend at Leopardstown. Hayes, 38, won the Irish 2,000 Guineas for Shadwell on Awtaad in 2016.

Anmaat, a general 8-1 shot for the Irish Champion Stakes, seems to be in great form at home. Hayes will ride the horse this Saturday, following its impressive performance in the Prince Of Wales's earlier in the year, where it ran a brilliant race despite the ground being quicker than it preferred.

As for Shadwell, they now face the challenge of finding replacements for Crowley on their horses for the remainder of the season. No decisions have been made regarding these replacements as of yet.

Our thoughts are with Jim Crowley and Trevor Whelan for a speedy recovery.
