Racing season continues as Formula 1 makes its appearance at Monza, with Ferrari taking center stage
The Italian Grand Prix, the final European race of the Formula 1 season, is approaching, and the focus is squarely on the Ferrari team. The iconic race at Monza, often referred to as the Temple of Speed, holds a special significance for the Italian team, who are determined to secure victory on home turf.
However, the road to success may not be easy. The Ferrari driver who competed in the 2025 Italian Grand Prix did not win the race; the honour went to Max Verstappen driving for Red Bull, while Ferrari's Charles Leclerc finished fourth. This victory extended Verstappen's lead in the World Championship, with Oscar Piastri of McLaren currently holding the top spot with 309 points. Lando Norris, another McLaren driver, is in second place with 275 points, needing to make up a 34-point gap to Piastri.
Ferrari is aware of the challenge ahead and is working hard to improve their performance. The team has been focusing on closing the gap with the current dominant teams in the World Championship, the McLarens. Charles Leclerc, who previously surprised McLaren with a standout performance, is a key player in Ferrari's bid for victory.
In practice sessions for the Italian Grand Prix, the Ferrari drivers have shown promising signs. Carlos Sainz, a Ferrari driver, is currently in third place, while Leclerc is not far behind in fifth. Sainz's teammate, the 2025 Italian Grand Prix winner Max Verstappen, was sixth in practice.
Meanwhile, the McLarens have been setting the pace. On Friday, Lando Norris was the fastest in practice, with his teammate Oscar Piastri close behind. However, neither Piastri nor Norris has won in Monza before, adding an extra layer of intrigue to the race.
Elsewhere, the Mercedes team did not meet expectations from the last grand prix, raising questions about their form going into the Italian Grand Prix. Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin found himself in the lower zone during practice, while his teammate Sebastian Vettel fared slightly better.
As the Italian Grand Prix approaches, the Ferrari team is under significant focus. A victory at Monza would be a morale boost for the team and their fans, but they face a tough challenge from the dominant McLarens. The race promises to be a thrilling conclusion to the European leg of the Formula 1 season.
