Wildfires Rage Across Spain: A Roundup of Current Situations

Wildfires are currently causing concern in several provinces across Spain, with active blazes reported in Cáceres, Pontevedra, and Ávila. Let's take a look at the latest updates on these fires.

In the province of Ávila, the lockdown in El Arenal and Mombeltrán was lifted this Thursday morning. With around 2,000 residents living year-round, the number of people currently in the area is nearly double that. The fire in this region is maintaining three active flame fronts. The main mission of the large operation here is to establish control lines that prevent the fire from escaping and reproducing, with efforts focused on perimetering the towns of El Arenal and Mombeltrán.

The most serious fire of the summer in Extremadura is the one burning in Caminomorisco, Cáceres. This fire has consumed nearly 2,775 hectares, forcing the evacuation of approximately 200 residents from the region. Around 400 personnel are working tirelessly to extinguish this blaze.

In Pontevedra, the Cañiza fire, for which the Military Emergency Unit (UME) has been mobilized, now affects 300 hectares. The fire in the parish of O Couto has forced the Xunta to decree level 2 of emergency due to its proximity to the population nucleus of Nogueiró.

The General Directorate of Emergencies and Interior of the Xunta de Galicia has lifted the confinement of the population in the area of the A Cañiza fire.

The firefighting efforts in Cáceres during the July 2021 wildfires involved firefighters and specialized military units. The local firefighters faced difficult conditions, and additional units were requested from other autonomous regions to assist in combating the fires.

In the province of Barranco de las Cinco Villas, Ávila, a fire has burned 2,200 hectares within a perimeter of 25 kilometers.

As these wildfires continue to rage, it's important to remember the message from ECOticias.com: greater responsibility and awareness are needed to prevent forest fires during the summer months. The efforts of the firefighters and military units are commendable, but prevention is always the best approach. Stay safe and let's hope for rain to quell these fires soon.
