In the lead-up to the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections, a series of events have unfolded, characterised by political tensions, demonstrations, and clashes.

Tejashwi Yadav, leader of the INDIA bloc, has declared himself the chief ministerial candidate for the elections, asserting his role in the opposition's agenda. Meanwhile, the Congress party's Rahul Gandhi and Tejashwi Yadav led the Voter Adhikar Yatra, a 16-day march across Bihar covering over 1,300 kilometres and 20 districts, which ended on Monday, September 1, 2025, in Patna.

The Yatra, however, was not without controversy. An incident occurred in response to a purported video showing offensive remarks against the Prime Minister and his late mother. The gesture was captured on camera and quickly went viral on social media, sparking outrage within the BJP. Rahul Gandhi remained silent on Tejashwi Yadav's proclamation, but Congress leaders like Pawan Khera expressed the demonstrations as a reflection of "anger and sadness" among the people who felt "deceived" by the government.

The incident led to clashes between BJP and Congress workers in Patna, resulting in stone-pelting near the Congress office. BJP leaders strongly condemned the remarks made in Darbhanga, with Bihar minister Nitin Nabin declaring that "every son of Bihar will give a befitting reply" for the insult to the Prime Minister's mother.

The opposition bloc has alleged "vote theft" in previous elections, with Tejashwi Yadav branding Nitish Kumar, the current Chief Minister, a "copycat" who merely follows policies introduced by others. The BJP leaders, in turn, accused the opposition of "lowering political standards."

Authorities confirmed the arrest of one accused in the abuse case, identified as "Raja," and registered a case against those involved. The Election Commission has yet to announce the poll dates for the Bihar Assembly elections.

As the political landscape in Bihar continues to evolve, it is clear that the upcoming elections will be marked by intense competition and heated debates. The Voter Adhikar Yatra may have concluded, but the political discourse in Bihar is far from over.
