Railway expansion urged by Brandenburg's transport chief in the northern region
In a significant development, Brandenburg's Transport Minister, Detlef Tabbert (BSW), has expressed his intention to lobby for the expansion of rail links between Brandenburg and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. This initiative is part of a larger project known as the "Prignitz-Südmecklenburg" route upgrade.
The project, which is currently under consideration, focuses on reactivating and enhancing the lines between Neustadt (Dosse), Kyritz, Pritzwalk, and Güstrow, as well as between Parchim, Malchow, and Waren/Müritz. The preferred speed upgrade variant for economic viability is 80 km/h.
A study conducted on these rail lines for regional rail lines 73 and 74 has revealed that two expansion variants are feasible in the northwest of Brandenburg and southwest Mecklenburg.
Detlef Tabbert views this project as a project for the future, aiming to benefit commuters, businesses, and tourists by improving connectivity and enhancing the quality of life in the regions of Brandenburg and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
The Transport Minister has already met with the new federal transport minister, Patrick Schnieder (CDU), to discuss this proposal at the federal level. The joint cabinet meeting of both federal states, scheduled for September, will further discuss the rail project.
It is worth noting that the rail project under consideration includes the "Mecklenburgische Südbahn" line. Detlef Tabbert has not disclosed any new information about his intentions or meetings regarding this project in recent times.
The next steps towards implementing the chosen variant will be discussed at the joint cabinet meeting in September. The expansion of rail traffic between Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Brandenburg, if approved, could potentially open up new opportunities for economic growth and regional development in both states.
