In the aftermath of the tragic derailment of the Elevador da Glória in Lisbon last Wednesday, which resulted in 16 fatalities and over 20 injuries, Portugal's Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, Carlos Moedas, has refused to resign from his position.
The derailment occurred at 18:04 on Calçada da Glória, leaving a trail of devastation. The identities of the victims have since been confirmed by the Judicial Police (PJ), with the assistance of the National Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences. The nationalities of the victims include five Portuguese, two South Koreans, one Swiss, three British, two Canadians, one Ukrainian, one American, and one French.
The incident has sparked controversy, particularly due to Moedas' statements regarding the accident. Lisbon's mayor, José Luís Carneiro, Secretary-General of the Socialist Party, has expressed regret over Moedas' statements about a former minister, Jorge Coelho. Carneiro also accused Moedas of lying about the reasons that led Coelho to resign.
Carneiro stated that he cannot find elements to ask for Moedas' resignation in relation to the derailment of the Elevador da Glória. However, he considered the language used by Moedas to be insulting and stated that Moedas' statements show a serious problem of conscience and coherence.
Moedas has rejected comparisons with Coelho, who resigned from his post as minister after the Entre-os-Rios bridge incident in 2001. The mayor emphasised that Coelho's office received information about the fragility of the bridge before the accident, while Moedas did not receive any such signal regarding the Elevador da Glória.
The issue at hand is the derailment of the Elevador da Glória and Moedas' refusal to resign. Moedas has so far refused to step down, stating that he believes he can continue to serve the people of Portugal effectively in his role as Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation.
This ongoing controversy continues to dominate headlines in Portugal, with many calling for transparency and accountability in the wake of the tragic accident. The investigation into the derailment of the Elevador da Glória is still ongoing, and it remains to be seen what further developments will unfold in this unfortunate situation.
