In a surprising turn of events, German Bundestag Vice-President Bodo Ramelow has proposed a referendum on the national anthem and flag of Germany. The Left Party (Die Linke) member suggested that the debate surrounding these symbols of the nation could be resolved through a public vote.

Ramelow, who has been vocal about his beliefs, feels that the colours black-red-gold represent freedom and are worth defending. He believes it's essential to have a say in the matter, particularly when it comes to the national anthem. The current anthem is the third stanza of "Das Lied der Deutschen," but Ramelow has proposed considering a vote on Bertolt Brecht's "Kinderhymne" as an alternative.

Interestingly, the idea of Brecht's "Kinderhymne" as a potential national anthem is not new. During German reunification, this poem was proposed as a possible anthem for the reunited Germany. Ramelow's suggestion, however, goes beyond just the anthem, as he has proposed a referendum on a new constitution that could replace the Basic Law.

Article 146 of the Basic Law explicitly provides for the possibility of a referendum on the anthem and flag. Ramelow's idea was first proposed in an interview with the "Rheinische Post." If a vote were to occur, Ramelow has stated that he would vote for black-red-gold.

Despite the controversy his comments have sparked, Ramelow feels misunderstood. He clarified that he has never demanded the abolition of the current flag and anthem. Instead, he wants the public to have a say in the matter. Ramelow sings the third stanza of "Das Lied der Deutschen" with conviction, but he believes it's important to have a vote on the German flag as well.

The debate surrounding Ramelow's comments on the German flag and national anthem is ongoing. Critics argue that changing such symbols could lead to division, while supporters believe it's a step towards a more inclusive and representative Germany. Regardless of the outcome, Ramelow's proposal has certainly sparked a much-needed conversation about the symbols that represent our nation.
