Unrest Spreads Across Indonesia Following Death of Ride-Hailing Driver
Protests have erupted across Indonesia in response to the death of 21-year-old ride-hailing driver Affan Kurniawan. The inciting incident occurred during a rally in the capital Jakarta on Thursday.
In Jakarta, clashes between riot police and protesters led to the hospitalisation of approximately 25 officers, according to authorities. The National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) reported that about 950 people were arrested in rallies in Jakarta alone.
The protests have since spread to multiple cities, including Surabaya, Indonesia's second-largest city, where demonstrators stormed the regional police headquarters and torched vehicles. In Bali, protesters marched to the regional police headquarters, leading to clashes with riot police.
In Surabaya, security forces used tear gas and water cannons, but demonstrators fought back with fireworks and wooden clubs. Protesters in West Java's Bandung city set a regional parliament ablaze on Friday, but no casualties were reported.
The unrest has also reached other parts of the country, with clashes between riot police and protesters reported in cities such as Medan, Solo, Yogyakarta, Magelang, Malang, Bengkulu, Pekanbaru, and Manokwari in easternmost Papua region.
The blaze in Makassar, South Sulawesi province, began late Friday night, with television reports showing the provincial council building ablaze overnight, causing the area to turn an eerie orange color. At least three people died and five others were hospitalized due to the fire. Five people were hospitalized with burns or broken bones after jumping from the building.
A video on social media apparently shows Kurniawan's death, which shocked the nation and spurred an outcry against the security forces. Witnesses reported that Kurniawan was completing a food delivery order when he was caught in a clash and was run over by an armored car from the National Police's Mobile Brigade unit.
The Komnas HAM believes that the number of injured people on the community side is much bigger. Rescuers retrieved three bodies on Saturday morning.
Hundreds of ride-hailing drivers and students in Bali staged a solidarity demonstration over Kurniawan's death on Saturday. Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto cancelled his planned visit to China next week due to escalating nationwide protests.
The protests in Indonesia have grown wider and more violent following Kurniawan's death, with many calling for justice and an end to police brutality. The government has yet to make a formal statement regarding the incidents.
