Rampant Spread of 'Airport Theory' Causes Disruptions as Passengers Miss Departures for a Foolish Motive

In the world of modern travel, a new trend has emerged, dubbed the "Airport Theory." TikTok creators are testing their luck by arriving at the airport only 15 to 20 minutes before boarding time. However, travel experts across the board advise against this approach, especially for those with onward travel or flying internationally.

The airport can indeed be a great place to relax, recharge, or get work done before a flight. Airports often offer shops, bars, restaurants, and other activities to enjoy. But, the unpredictable nature of airports makes the "Airport Theory" a risky bet.

Risks associated with this approach are plentiful. Missing the flight due to arriving too late is the most obvious, but unpredictable delays, not getting your bag on the plane, airline cutoffs, causing anxiety, not getting to your destination on time, having to pay for an overnight hotel stay, missing a connecting flight, and more are all potential pitfalls.

Travel instructors recommend following the time buffer advised by the tour operator for arrival at the airport to avoid issues with missed flights. Even a short delay like 15 minutes can lead to denied claims for compensation.

Kate Boyer, the general manager of airports at Airport New Zealand, recommends arriving at least an hour before the flight's departure time for domestic flights and three hours before for international flights. Eli Harris, a travel adviser, still arrives hours early at the airport, knowing that anything can happen.

Some creators may be setting up their followers for failure by pretending to make their flights in little time. Harris usually arrives two hours early for domestic flights and three hours early for international flights, considering factors such as luggage, early closure of bag drop, and special assistance.

Katy Nastro, a travel expert, has personally made it to a flight with only 30 minutes before takeoff, but only under specific circumstances (TSA PreCheck, an empty airport, and a flight delay). However, such circumstances are not guaranteed, and the general advice stands: slow and steady is the best approach when traveling.

Travel insurance is also recommended to avoid being on the hook for tickets for the flight you missed. Arriving late at the airport and expecting exceptions from airport workers is not advisable.

In conclusion, while the airport can be a great place to unwind before a flight, the "Airport Theory" is a risky gamble that could lead to missed flights, lost luggage, and other travel mishaps. It's always better to watch an episode of your favorite show on Netflix, sipping a coffee, than to miss a flight due to arriving too late at the airport.
