Panama's Matusagarati Wetland Complex Recognised as Ramsar Site

The Matusagarati Wetland Complex, nestled within the Darien jungle province, has been officially recognised as a Ramsar Site. This designation was granted during the 15th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP15), which is currently taking place in Zimbabwe.

The Ramsar Convention, adopted in 1971, aims to conserve and rationally use wetlands worldwide. With this recognition, the Matusagarati Wetland Complex joins the international network of wetlands of ecological importance. It is now the sixth Ramsar Site in Panama and the sixth Panamanian site inscribed on the international list.

Covering an expansive area of 64,750 hectares, the Matusagarati Wetland Complex is the largest in Panama. It comprises a wide variety of ecosystems, including lagoons, mangroves, wetlands, and aquatic grasslands. This diverse landscape serves as a vital habitat for numerous plant and animal species.

The wetland complex is particularly significant as it provides a refuge, breeding, and feeding ground for many migratory and resident birds, fish, reptiles, and other aquatic animals. It is a source of resources for the local communities that live in the area, who rely on sustainable fishing and tourism activities.

Digna Barsallo, the national director of Coasts and Seas of the Ministry of Environment, received the certification of the Matusagarati Wetland Complex as a Ramsar Site. This recognition not only underscores the importance of the wetland complex but also highlights Panama's commitment to preserving its natural heritage.

Worldwide, the Matusagarati Wetland Complex now ranks number 2,566 among the Ramsar Sites. This designation not only brings international recognition to Panama but also promotes the responsible use of its resources.

With this recognition, the Matusagarati Wetland Complex continues to serve as a testament to Panama's dedication to conserving its natural resources and protecting its biodiversity.
