Ranking of the Top African Nations by their Richest Residents in the Year 2025
In the vibrant and diverse continent of Africa, the wealth landscape is as rich and diverse as its cultures. Here's a snapshot of the billionaires and millionaires who call Africa home.
Africa currently boasts 20 billionaires, with a combined net worth of $82.4 billion. These tycoons are concentrated in just seven countries, with South Africa leading the pack. The Rainbow Nation is home to 6 billionaires, including Johann Rupert and family, Nicky Oppenheimer & family, Patrice Motsepe, Koos Bekker, Michiel Le Roux, Christoffel Wiese, and Aliko Dangote (who, as the founder of Dangote Cement, is the richest man in Africa with a net worth of $13.6 billion). Together, these South African billionaires hold a combined net worth of $58.1 billion.
Egypt follows closely with 5 billionaires, namely Nassef Sawiris, Naguib Sawiris, Mohamed Mansour, Youssef Mansour, and Yasseen Mansour, whose combined net worth amounts to $31.8 billion.
Nigeria, the most populous nation in Africa, comes in third with 4 billionaires - Aliko Dangote, Mike Adenuga, Abdul Samad Rabiu, and Femi Otedola - whose combined net worth totals $30.7 billion.
Morocco has 2 billionaires, Aziz Akhannouch and Othman Benjelloun, with a combined net worth of $3.3 billion. Meanwhile, Algeria and Zimbabwe each have one billionaire: Issad Rebrab ($2.7 billion) and Strive Masiyiwa ($3.1 billion), respectively. Tanzania also has one billionaire, Mohammed Dewji, worth $1.8 billion.
Interestingly, the five African countries with the largest share of billionaires and millionaires among the continent's wealthiest are South Africa (leading with 34% of all millionaires), followed by Egypt, Morocco, Nigeria, and Kenya. Kenya, in particular, has 8,500 millionaires and a total private wealth of $91 billion.
Angola, primarily driven by its oil and gas industry, has a total private wealth of $42 billion, but no billionaires. However, the country does boast a record of 2,400 millionaires. Mauritius, on the other hand, boasts 4,800 millionaires and a wealth per capita of $37,500.
It's worth noting that the ratio of billionaires in Africa to its population is 0.00000000146 or 1.46 in 100 million of the 1.373 billion population. This suggests that the wealth is concentrated among a small portion of the population, but the continent's economic potential remains vast and untapped.
The total private wealth of the top wealthy people in Africa is around $2.5 trillion, a testament to the continent's economic resilience and growth potential. As Africa continues to develop, we can expect to see more names added to this list of billionaires and millionaires.
